Mechanical gaming keyboards are essential for the top streamers and professional players. On these keyboards, it’s the mechanical switches that really make a difference. But, exactly, how does a mechanical switch function? And which switch is best for you? We will be explaining to you about switches and hopefully, you will be able to decide on a switch which suits you best!
How A Switch Works
A mechanical switch is made up of three parts: a base, a spring, and a stem. The type of switch is determined by the shape of the stem at the base of the switch. The keystroke is registered when the stem makes contact with the spring (the actuation point).
Types of Switches
Cherry manufactures the majority of switches. This company has been manufacturing mechanical switches for more than three decades and is thus the most well-known brand on the market. Other or homemade switches are used by some businesses. Switches like the Kailh and the Romer G are also common.
Cherry MX Red
Red switches are linear switches. They are sensitive, which means that pressing the keys requires less force, and you won’t feel or hear the key register. The red switch is popular among gamers because it responds quickly and requires less force.
Cherry MX Blue
Blue switches are clicky switches. When a keystroke is registered on a blue switch, you’ll hear a click. When typing, programming, or playing strategy games, this comes in handy. You don’t have to push the key all the way because you know exactly when it registers.
Cherry MX Brown
Brown tactile switches are a combination of red and blue tactile switches. When you reach the actuation point on brown switches, you’ll notice a quiet but distinct bump. If you type and game a lot, this should be the most satisfying choice!
